You’ve got headaches, and you want to feel better, but you don’t want to take medication. What headache treatment is available?

Here’s some physio exercises for headaches, that can help you feel better without needing to take pain relief. If you suffer with headaches, these simple stretches can help take some of the tension and pain away. See Video Below**

 

 

Make sure you start GENTLY, and hold each stretch for 10 seconds or less. As your symptoms improve, you can gradually increase this to 20 seconds per stretch.

 

 

 

  

 

 

Common types of headaches

There are many types of headaches, including:

  • tension headaches
  • cluster headaches
  • migraine
  • viral headaches
  • hormonal headaches
  • dehydration headaches

You may have experienced some of these types of headaches, and it can be awful!

 

Headache treatment

 

Treatment for each type of headache is very different, as each type of headache has a different cause. Physiotherapists can treat headaches that have the following behaviour

  • headaches that are aggravated by long periods sitting, standing or working
  • stiff or sore neck
  • tight shoulders or back
  • limited movement in neck and back

We use a range of techniques to treat headaches, including:

  • dry needling
  • massage
  • manual therapy
  • spine mobilisation
  • posture advice
  • ergonomic advice
  • education on cause and self management strategies
  • exercise and strengthening to build your capacity to cope with the task
